The advantages of Meditation & Mindfulness

Meditation & Mindfulness are no longer considered “alternative” or “woo woo.” A growing body of scientific research now shows what people have been experiencing, that having a regular meditation and mindfulness practice creates real, measurable changes in your body and brain, supporting both physical and emotional wellbeing.

One of the most profound benefits is the changes to your nervous system.

Life keeps many of us locked in a prolonged stress response. Over time, this shows up as anxiety, overwhelm, restless nights, persistent muscle tension or deep fatigue.

These aren’t personal failings. They’re simply your body’s way of asking for what it needs support, kindness, and space to relax.

Meditation and mindfulness give your body’s permission to rest.

Through gentle, consistent practice, you can help your nervous system find its way back to balance reducing stress, improving sleep and creating a deeper sense of calm that extends into every part of your life.

What’s the difference between Meditation & Mindfulness?

Meditation is a formal practice where you set aside time to train your attention, while mindfulness is bringing that same quality of present-moment awareness into everyday activities like eating, walking, or listening. Both work together to create lasting change in how you experience life.

How does it all work?

In a nutshell, think of your nervous system like a volume dial that’s been turned up too high for too long. Meditation and mindfulness help turn it back down, guiding you out of constant “fight or flight” and into a calmer state where your body can heal and restore itself.

With regular practice, you’re teaching yourself to recognise what relaxation feels like and mindfulness helps you carry that sense of calm into everyday moments. This gives insight into your stress levels before stress takes over.

Research from Dr. Herbert Benson1 and others confirms what people experience creating real, measurable changes in their body and mind. The changes include better sleep, a quieter mind, less tension in shoulders, more patience with oneself and others, and that rare but wonderful feeling of being steady even when life isn’t.

Together, these practices don’t just help you cope they can help you to thrive.

Changing your habits

It is possible through a regular practice that you can experience lasting changes in habits and thought patterns. You can potentially resolve negative thoughts and feelings about a person or situation using Loving Kindness actions and meditations, also known as Metta.

Modern neuroscience2 confirms these benefits using MRI and EEG scans, studies show that meditation promotes activity in areas of the brain linked to clarity, emotional regulation, empathy, memory, and positive mood, while reducing activation in the brain’s stress and fear centres. This adaptive capacity, known as neuroplasticity, can be activated through meditation.

Different meditation & mindfulness styles offer different forms of support

Breath-based meditation calms the nervous system.

Mindfulness meditation reduces reactivity and mental overwhelm.

Loving Kindness (Metta) increases compassion and emotional warmth.

Guided visualisations support deep rest and recovery.
